Skunk Cabbage · Lysichitum americanum
Description: striking perennial with huge green leaves (2-3 ft, 1 foot wide) that push out from the ground. Its unusual flowers-- upright stalk covered with lots of tiny, greenish flowers (spadex) covered by a yellow hood (spathe)-bloom in early spring. Winter dormant. Skunk cabbage inhabits dark, boggy places and provides food for animals in early spring. Shade/part sun, regular water.
